Bald Celebrities: Female Stars Who Dare to Go Bare

Recently, I wrote about my breast cancer and subsequent chemotherapy sessions. This journey has taught me so much, and one of the most important lessons was how to love and nurture myself. Part of that included embracing the new bald me. If you are going through hair loss yourself (whether it’s due to aging or for medical reasons like chemotherapy or alopecia), here are some bald celebrities who can motivate you to rock your smooth scalp! Rocker Melissa Etheridge, with the help of her partner and two kids, shaved her hair following treatment for breast cancer. Soon after, she performed a show-stopping performance at the 2005 Grammy Awards. 

Sex and the City alum shaved off her trademark red hair to star in Wit on Broadway. Nixon played a woman going through cancer treatment, and the play is as memorable and moving as Nixon herself.  

Who can forget when this brunette beauty shaved off her lustrous locks and went bald for G.I. Jane? Demi proved that, hair or no hair, she was a star and a talented actor in her own right.

This smart and sexy actor and humanitarian went bald for the movie V for Vendetta. She reportedly said she was happy to throw vanity to the wind and shave off her long hair. The result was gorgeous and powerful.  

Another intelligent and strong woman who went bald for a movie role, Sigourney shaved her head for Alien and proved that women can kick butt inside and outside the movie theater. 

Talented Irish crooner made going bald the ultimate symbol of feminist power and beauty in the nineties. She proved you can be sexy, smart, desirable, and bald all at once! 

Indian actor and model Persis Khambatta is best known for her role in Star Trek: The Motion Picture, for which she shaved her head. When given the choice to wear a bald cap by the producers, Khambatta opted to simply dive into her role wholeheartedly and shaved off her long dark hair voluntarily.  

Talented actress and Academy Award–winner Charlize Theron recently shaved off her long blonde hair for a role in an upcoming Mad Max film. Hair or no hair, the new mom is still as beautiful and glowing as ever.  

These inspiring breast-cancer survivors have a lot to teach women when it comes to surviving and rebuilding after treatment. Here’s to survivors everywhere!

Singer Willow Smith, daughter of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, recently shaved off her long hair. The move is brave and unique for many reasons. For one thing, Willow’s best-known hit is “Whip My Hair” and for another she is only 11 years old. I love that she’s not afraid to embrace her own style and make her own choices, and I hope she inspires girls everywhere to realize that your hair doesn’t define you. You define yourself. Bald women unite! 

Yes, me! I recently shaved my head as part of my chemotherapy treatment. Although I have lost my hair, my health will soon be better than ever: Now that my treatment is complete, my risk of my cancer returning will be no greater than the risk of that the next woman. And, also important, I have learned to love and embrace the new bald me!
